Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know about Qamea Kava, how it feels, and how to drink it.

What does Kava actually feel like?

Calm, and social. Most people describe it as their shoulders dropping and conversation coming easier — without losing clarity or control. It’s a settling feeling rather than an intoxicating one, and it comes on gently over 15–30 minutes.

What’s the difference between the Drink Mix and Traditional Kava?

Both are the same Noble Fijian root from our farm on Qamea Island — the difference is how you drink it. Traditional Kava is the ground root: you knead it in a strainer bag with water, pour it into a bowl, and share it. It takes about ten minutes and it tastes earthy, the way it has for centuries. The Drink Mix is made to dissolve — stir it into a glass of water, it’s ready in seconds, and it’s fruit-flavoured. If you’re new to Kava, start with the Drink Mix; if you want the full ritual, go traditional.

Can it replace alcohol on a night out?

Plenty of people use it exactly that way. Kava has been the social drink of Fiji for centuries — it’s what people gather around. If you’re looking for a way to unwind and connect without the next-day hangover, this is what it was made for.

What does it taste like?

That depends which one. Traditional Kava is earthy and peppery — it tastes like a root, because that’s what it is, and most people drink it in one go rather than sipping. The Drink Mix is fruit-flavoured and much smoother, with the fruit leading and the earthiness sitting well behind it.

What is Noble Kava, and why does it matter?

Noble varieties are the cultivars traditionally grown for daily drinking in Fiji, selected over generations for a smoother, more balanced experience. Non-noble “tudei” Kava is cheaper and harsher. We only grow and sell Noble Fijian Kava, and every harvest is lab tested.

Where does Qamea Kava come from?

Our own farm on Qamea Island, Fiji — a small island off Taveuni. The root is grown for at least four years, harvested by hand with families from the local villages, and air-freighted fresh every month rather than sitting in shipping containers.

How much should I use?

It depends which one. For Traditional Kava, start with one tablespoon (about 15g) kneaded in half a cup of water. For the Drink Mix, one scoop stirred into a glass of water. Either way, see how you feel before making a second — everyone’s different. Use in moderation, and give it time to settle in.
