Qamea Island, Fiji
What is Kava?
It settles you without slowing you down — a clear-headed calm that leaves you relaxed, present, and easy in conversation.
The short version
Kava is a plant — specifically the root of Piper methysticum, a pepper relative that grows across the Pacific Islands. It has been the social drink of Fiji for well over a thousand years.
It isn’t a novelty there, and it isn’t a supplement. It’s what you serve guests and share with friends — part of daily life, from big occasions to any ordinary day.
Where Kava comes from
Kava grows in the tropics, and unlike most crops the part you want is below the soil. The root takes years to mature before it’s ready.
Ours is grown on our own family farm on Qamea Island, Fiji — matured four years in volcanic soil, then hand-harvested, dried, and ground into the powder that becomes the drink. Here’s how to prepare traditional Kava at home.
A non-alcoholic drink you can actually feel
A wave of relaxation that eases the day’s tension
A gentle tingle, then a calm that settles in
Sociable and clear-headed — present the whole time
What Kava feels like
Most people describe it as their shoulders dropping.
It’s a physical calm more than a mental fog — you stay clear-headed and completely yourself, you’re just less wound up. Conversation gets easier. Time slows down a bit.
It comes on gently, usually within fifteen to thirty minutes, and it builds if you have another cup. Your lips and tongue may tingle or go slightly numb for a few minutes after drinking — that’s normal, and it passes.

What Kava doesn’t do
It doesn’t intoxicate you the way alcohol does.
There’s no loss of control, no blackout, and no hangover the next morning. That’s the whole reason it has caught on with people cutting back on drinking — it isn’t about giving anything up, it’s about having another way to relax and connect.

What Kava tastes like
Honestly? Traditional Kava tastes earthy.
It’s an acquired taste — earthy and distinctive — and for a lot of people it takes a few tries to settle into.
That’s exactly why we created our flavoured Kava Drink Mix: the same Noble Fijian root, made to dissolve in water in seconds and made to actually taste good. If you’re new to Kava, start there.
Noble Kava vs “tudei”
The part that actually matters.
Not all Kava is the same, and this is the most important thing to understand before you buy any. Noble varieties are the cultivars Pacific Islanders selected over centuries for daily drinking. They’re balanced, smooth, and they’re what’s traditionally consumed in Fiji.
Tudei Kava — from “two days” — is cheaper to grow and harsher to drink, and it was never intended for regular use. Qamea is Noble Fijian Kava, and every harvest is independently lab tested before it ships. If a brand can’t tell you which one it’s selling, that’s your answer.
How we compare
Qamea Kava vs. other Kava.
Most Kava is bought through a broker and blended from who-knows-where. Ours is single-origin, whole root, and traceable to the farm it grew on.
